For the Lazy Yogi April giveaway, I will be offering a tourmalated quartz and bone wrist mala. Click here for more pictures.

Bone is a common material used in malas from both Nepal and Tibet. While these bones could sometimes be animal or human, no lives are taken for the purpose of creating these implements.

A recurrent form of laying the dead to rest is called sky burial. Dead bodies are left on specially designated locations such as mountaintops and exposed to the elements. Creatures of all kinds pick the corpses clean and the bones are then collected by monks.

While it may be said that bone has a variety of energetic properties, they are also reminders of impermanence. These bodies we wear and the worlds we create around them are fragile and all too temporary.

To me, this beautiful mala is a reminder of the temporary nature posed by the human condition. The white and black of the crystals evoke the balance of yin and yang while the grinning skulls serve as memento mori.

The description on the Japa Mala Beads site reads:

“Tourmalated Quartz is known as a powerful stone for protection and grounding. This stone also creates balance and inner strength, deflects and transforms negativity, and reduces anxiety and depression.

Bone is a traditional material used in malas in both Nepal and Tibet. Bone signifies strength and is said to amplify prana (life force energy.) These carved skull beads are reminiscent of the necklace of skulls that the Goddess Kali wears symbolizing liberation, knowledge and wisdom.”

Wearing wrist malas are a wonderful way of remembering to be mindful as we go about our day. The touch of the beads on our skin is a helpful wakeup call to get out of our head and into the moment.
